Go Piss Girl

I was recently reminded of this meme while watching a video from a popular mug salesman. I forget the exact context of why this was brought up, but it made me realize there were two possible interpretations of the phrase “go piss girl” in a vacuum.

One interpretation of the phrase is to instruct someone to go urinate.

The other interpretation is a cheer directed towards an individual named “piss girl”.

Obviously you can assert one interpretation or the other with the inclusion of tone and comma placement; but devoid of context, it IS kind of ambiguous.

But once we look at the first part of the original meme, it’s clear that the original intent is the former interpretation: an enthusiastic command telling your homegirl to go pee.

A comical edit of the Gossip Girl logo feat. piss

I wanted to do a little bit of research on this meme, so as many people do, I started my search at knowyourmeme dot com. Immediately I was thrown for a loop because KYM seems to suggest that the meme was

a.) first created in 2020
b.) did not originate on tumblr

For some reason I could have sworn the meme originated on the hellsite known as tumblr long ago. At least pre-2017. But According to sources on KYM, the first known posting of the Gossip Girl edited meme appeared on a Facebook group called Useless, Unsuccessful, and/or Unpopular Memes on April 10th, 2020 posted by an individual named Tyler Wood. One day later, it was posted to twitter by user @baro_tokiyo (a now inactive account). Presumably kickstarting its virality across the internet. Sources such as this Medium article by Amalia Teixeira even incorrectly attribute the meme to @baro_tokiyo for this reason.

Anyways, this was essentially when the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown began to be felt across the populous. So this was only one of many memes that started to spread at the time. But I distinctly recall hearing/reading the phrase “go piss girl” prior to the pandemic. I contacted a friend of mine who used to frequent tumblr in its hayday (this would have been when we were in highschool, so probably around 2014-2017?). She claims to have read a post about a girl who developed kidney stones after holding in her pee frequently. Eventually leading to a response by another tumblr user prompting her to “go piss girl”. I did some searching and was unable to find such a post but there does appear to be a tiktoker who matches the description of this exact story.

tiktok user @brackendra is the protagonist of this story. But this account appears to have been created in July 10, 2020. Once again giving credence to the fact that the “go piss girl” meme originated post pandemic. My friend still adamantly insists that “go piss girl” was a thing on tumblr way before that. Given my understanding of tumblr, I do believe that this was something they would have came up with (I should note there are several site-wide community jokes and memes involving piss, so this would be par for the course. Infamously there was the dashcon 1 ball pit piss incident that was debunked to be a fake story).

Right now, all evidence does seem to suggest the meme was created in 2020. But there are several small clues that indicate there was earlier history of the phrase. Firstly, the meme page it was posted to was called the “Useless, Unsuccessful, and/or Unpopular Memes” page. This implies the meme was at least in circulation prior to it being posted to that Facebook group. The original poster does imply that he made the posted picture so there’s something to be said there. Secondly, if you searched the Google search trend graph for the phrase, you can see that there are blips of it in 2014 and 2017, which would line up with when my friend claimed to have seen the phrase.

Ultimately, my research is inconclusive since I could find no hard evidence. So it is possible that my friend and I are just experiencing collective Mandela effect.

I sent an email to STRANGE ÆONS on YouTube for her insight since she would definitely know. So I’ll update this page if she ever responds.

But I would argue the phrase “go piss girl” has somewhat escaped containment from its original context. I think there is a charitable interpretation that somewhere down the line, someone parroted “go piss girl” out of context and was read by someone else in such a context that could credibly be interpreted as rooting for a person named piss girl.

I would definitely argue that Douglas Wreden is in fact the titular piss girl everyone is referring to

So I went around and asked a bunch of people of what they thought the phrase. I made a little image gallery below showing all the responses I got:

So overall, the data are as follows

16 women and 6 men agreed with interpretation a.) instructing
6 women and 5 men agreed with interpretation b.) cheering
1 woman and 2 men could not decide and/or have an alternative interpretation

This shows that twice as many people agree with interpretation a.) which makes sense since that was the original intent of the phrase as outlined by the meme. Although while far more women agreed with interpretation a.) than b.), there appears to be an equal split amongst men (to be fair the men sample size is much smaller). I was initially shocked at how many people agreed with interpretation b.) as there was an almost 50/50 split of a.) and b.) responses. But the next day as more people responded to my texts I got almost exclusively a.) responses. Maybe this shows that people at night time perceive statements differently? Responses from day two are also mostly from people I don’t talk to as frequently while day one responses were from a lot of my current acquaintances.

I also scored each response with a confidence rating. If the response used language like “definitely” or “of course” then it is rated as confident.

4 men (11%) were confident in their answer and 7 women (20%) were confident in theirs.

Of those confident in their answer, 8 were confident in a.) and 3 were confident in b.)

Ultimately obviously there is an objective correct answer, but I like that without context, there’s an equally hilarious interpretation if you so choose to read it another way. I am personally a fan of the idea that we are cheering on the titular “piss girl”. Endearingly referring to my friends as piss girl might have to be something I do from now on.

unrelated, but I found this blog while researching and it’s just some lady doing fit checks of characters from the Gossip Girl show based on how easy they are to pee out of. I thought it was funny
