So historically, Nintendo has suffered the ire of gamers everywhere for their harsh anti-piracy stances. They routinely take down ROM hosting sites, shut down emulators, ban the sale of jailbreak hardware, etc etc. And usually this gets them a lot of flack since this harms game preservation and personal ownership rights. And to a sense, it DOES suck because they have successfully taken down things that should in theory be legal. Like emulators ARE legal and backing up ROMs IS legal. But it’s pretty obvious that people don’t use those tools for personal use and most people use them for piracy. So it’s understandable why Nintendo would take a stance on cracking down on them. This inevitably invites backlash and bad press.

But this made me realize, Sony and Xbox don’t have this issue as much. Not because they are lax on piracy, but because their systems are harder to jailbreak and pirate. So it’s not that Sony and Xbox are more pro-consumer, it’s just that they avoid the problem and allow all the hatred to be pointed towards Nintendo. Nintendo unfortunately had the mistake to make their console easy to jailbreak. Which is objectively good for preservation. It’s the reason why Switch emulators DO exist and why all Nintendo games prior to the Switch 2 HAVE been preserved online. But instead of celebrating Nintendo’s mistake and incompetence, people choose to focus on being angry at Nintendo’s attempts to remedy their mistake. People have become entitled to the fact that it is easy to exploit Nintendo’s flaws and become angry when they can no longer do so. I imagine Nintendo has learned this lesson and thus beefed up the security on the Switch 2 by a lot.
